Turbochargers act like an air pump in the engine, transporting air that’s in an ambient pressure, compressing it to a high pressure. Once compressed, the air is passed through to the engine via valves. Turbochargers are predominately used within diesel engines, but all types of engines need air and fuel to run efficiently. As users demand for more power and performance, turbochargers are becoming more common with a wide range of engines.

We offer in-house turbocharger testing and repairs, all completed at our dedicated workshop. In addition to repairing units, we can also supply units where required. From our vast experience of working with diesel fuel injectors and pumps, we’re able to provide the same level of service and attention to turbo testing and repairs.

One of the main causes of failure when fitting a turbocharger is oil starvation and blocked oil supply pipes. Within our repair service, we offer an oil priming syringe and fitment gaskets, where possible, with all turbos that are repaired or supplied by us. Where required, we can also provide new oil supply pipes.

Service backed by industry standard equipment

Within our turbocharger repair service, we utilise a Vibration Sorting & Flow Rig (VSFR), which is an industry-standard developed concept that combines the functions of balancing and flow setting in just one machine. The VSFR promotes the rebuilding of virtually all passenger car and light commercial turbochargers and is capable of balancing turbo cores at incredible speeds of up to 300,000 revs/min.

The flow-setting process used on the VSFR follows the same procedure that’s used by OEMS during the original manufacturing process. Through our experience and industry knowledge, we can test both vacuum and electronic actuators, which allows for the measurement and adjustment of mass airflow through variable geometry turbochargers.

Common turbocharger faults

Turbochargers are often a highly misunderstood element of an engine and often can be wrongly ruled as the cause of a fault. Turbochargers work within harsh environments – we’re talking extreme speeds and temperatures – so understanding how they work, and the different nuances of the conditions in which they operate is crucial for accurate fault finding and resolution. Lubricating oil is the elixir of a turbo – like a plant needs water, a turbocharger needs lubricating oil. But additionally, a turbo will only work well if it has been fitted to an appropriate engine that can handle its power. For example, a new turbocharger that has been fitted to an old engine won’t fix any issues related to the engine.

Common turbo faults are caused by:

Reduced volumes of lubricating oil
Dirt or debris within the lubricating system
Deterioration of lubrication oil
Debris within the exhaust or air-filtration system
Poor materials or workmanship during fitting
